Different Types of Plumbers & Their Licensing

A career in plumbing is a rewarding and potentially lucrative one, but it requires the right training and certification. Some people considering this career field get confused by the different types of plumbing titles used in the industry. Here is a closer look at the top three names plumbers use and what it takes to become one in the state of Illinois.

How to Become an Apprentice Plumber

The first step on the journey to becoming a plumber is becoming an apprentice plumber. Apprentice plumbers work under seasoned plumbers to get hands-on training in the field. To become an apprentice plumber, you will need the following qualifications:

  • Be 16 years old
  • Complete Apprentice Plumber’s License application form
  • Get a sponsorship from an Illinois licensed plumber

Once you achieve apprenticeship status, you will work with a seasoned plumber for around four to six years, at which time you can apply for and take the plumbers licensing exam, which Illinois Plumbing Consultants can help you prepare for.

How to Become a Journeyman Plumber

In Illinois, some licensed plumbers are called “journeyman” plumbers. This designation does not indicate any special level but simply indicates that the plumber is skilled enough to work independently and has completed the apprenticeship. This requires the plumber to pass the Illinois licensing exam, with which Illinois Plumbing Consultants can assist. Journeyman Plumber is a title often used in Chicago.

How to Become a Master Plumber

Many licensed plumbers in Illinois are called “Master Plumbers.” The state does not have a special license at this level, but the requirements are as follows:

  • Applicants must be 18 years old
  • Applicants must pay the licensure fee
  • Applicants must pass the state licensing exam for plumbers
  • Applicants must have 4 years of experience in an apprentice program

These requirements are the same for both Journeyman and Master plumber status. After completing these requirements, the individual will be a “licensed plumber” in Illinois.
