Plumbing Apprenticeships : How to Begin and What You’ll Learn

If you want to become a plumber in Illinois, apprenticeship training is essential. You can start this training as early as age 16, and there is no upper age limit. If you like working with your hands, enjoy solving problems and do not mind working in confined spaces, a career as a plumber may be an excellent fit.

How to Begin Your Illinois Apprenticeship

  • A high school diploma or GED often is required in order to enter an apprenticeship. If you are still in high school, complete all the math courses that you can, and concentrate on making good grades and staying away from drugs.
  • If you are 16 or older, look for a bonded, licensed master plumber who is willing to be your apprenticeship sponsor. Some sponsors allow their apprentices to earn course credits and gain hands-on experience while still in high school.
  • Once you have a sponsor, apply for your apprenticeship license from the state. You must be licensed in order for your apprenticeship to be recognized.
  • Your local plumber’s union also may have plumbing apprenticeships available. You can apply for a union apprenticeship at age 17 but usually must wait until you are 18 to be accepted.

What You Will Learn

Plumbing apprenticeships provide classroom and hands-on training in all areas of the plumbing trade. You will gain experience in planning complete plumbing systems as well as installing all components, including those for heating and cooling systems. You also will become qualified to service, maintain and repair water and sewer lines. Among other studies, you will learn about Illinois licensing requirements. When training is complete, you will be ready to pass your test to obtain a State of Illinois plumber’s license.
