What to Know About Your Plumbing Apprenticeship Sponsor

If you are considering becoming a plumber, one of the steps in the process is holding a plumber apprenticeship. Illinois Plumbing Consultants offers license test preparation, which is the second part of this process. Here’s what you need to know about finding a sponsor and the benefits that come with having one.

How a Sponsor Helps with Your Apprenticeship

In order to hold a plumbing apprenticeship, you will need to have a sponsor. Your sponsor is a licensed plumber, typically the one you work under as an apprentice, or a plumber you’ll work closely with.

By becoming your sponsor, this plumber is offering to help you during your training process. Sponsors will assist you during your apprenticeship and work to make sure you’re getting the most out of your experience. You can think of them as a mentor. The better your sponsor, the more successful your learning will be. That’s why it’s important to be proactive about finding one.

How to Find a Plumbing Apprenticeship Sponsor

You can find a plumbing apprenticeship sponsor in one of two ways. If you can find a licensed plumber who works as an independent plumber, you can ask them to serve as your sponsor. This is often the case for those who have a family member or friend who’s a plumber. Finding someone you do not know who is willing to take you on as an apprentice is a little more challenging.

The other option is to apply to a plumbing union that offers apprenticeship programs. These companies have a protocol in place for connecting apprentices with seasoned plumbers. Many will have a limit on the number of plumbing apprentices they will take at a time, so you should to apply to several. This is the most common route to take and is a great way to connect with professionals in the field. When you work as an apprentice with a union, you may also receive benefits.

Once you have a plumbing sponsor, you can apply to the state for a plumbing apprenticeship license from the state. Your plumbing sponsor will have to sign your apprenticeship application.

How IPC Can Help

During your apprenticeship, you can utilize our Plumbing License Prep Program to prepare for your plumbing license exam. You can also complete the Illinois Mock License Exam during your apprenticeship. Taking part in both of these things, along with completing your apprenticeship, will better prepare you for a job in the field.
